Here is a description of the March workshop, which has been provided by Barbara Blackwell.

“I have planned the workshop for March 1. Below is an outline. Everyone will have a chance to start a small painting. I will bring a sketch for each person. Then, I will teach how to apply the colored pencils. I’ve made a list of materials everyone should bring. Previously I suggested getting a small box of Prismacolor pencils. Most of these colors are found in the Prismacolor 12 box. The only one that isn’t is Scarlet Lake 923.

Do you know how many will be attending? I want to make enough handouts and
sketches.

List of materials:
Colored pencils
Prismacolor pencils
Scarlet Lake 923
Crimson Red 924

April — Art Contest/Competition — The goal of the competition is to encourage artists to expand their media, and challenge themselves as artists. Our hope is that this will be a learning experience, and that, through the process, members will grow as artists.

April Art Contest (Revised)

The goal of the competition is to encourage artists to expand their mediums.. Our hope is that this will be a learning experience, and through the process members will challenge themselves, and grow, as artists.

Process

Members were asked to sign up for the competition at the February meeting, although they are able to do so up to, but no later than, the March General Meeting.

An image has been selected for members to create work from. The image will be available via email, the Bald Eagle Art League website, as well as by physical copy at the March General Meeting.

During the month of March an artist specializing in the chosen medium will give a presentation on the use of the medium. This is encouraged for participants to learn the use and technique of the medium.

The artwork will be due during the April General Meeting, in which we will have a critique as well as awards for artists. There will be both a People’s Choice, as well as a Best of Medium award. Work will be handed in anonymously, numbered, and put out for display. Members will anonymously vote for the work they like best. These votes will be tallied and shared before the close of the meeting. One judge will also select the piece they feel represented the medium best. This will also be announced before the close of the meeting. Once announced, all winners are final. The judge will determine the winner by:

1) use of technique of medium (way in which the medium was used)
2) interpretation of image (how well the artist captured the image
3) individual style and design (this accounts for various types of styles)

Throughout the meeting, after the judging is complete, we will hold a critique for the artwork. At this time an artist may claim their piece for members to know who created it. Entries will be subjected to constructive criticism, and participants encouraged to discuss techniques, challenges, and what works well for the piece. Art work will be taken home at the end of the meeting.

Contest Rules

1) Only one entry may be made per person
2) 100% of the art work must be completed in chosen medium (graphite or charcoal preliminary sketching allowed)
3) Art work should be roughly no larger than 18×24 inches, and no smaller than 8×10 inches.
4) Art work can be done in any style, but must represent the chosen image.
5) Art work must be handed in at the start of the April Meeting to the designated person or persons organizing show. Artwork preferably brought in a paper bag, or a manner in which others will be able to identify.
6) Art work can be framed and/or matted, but not required. Please do not sign artwork where name can be seen.

May — Presentation on Fiber Arts

THOUGHTS FROM THE PRESIDENT

There are a few items that will be of interest to members this month. First and foremost, time is running short for someone to step up and offer leadership for way’s Garden. As of today there is no chairperson to organize the event and in the absence of a chairperson, there will be no event. Many dozens of members have enjoyed and benefited from this show for decades and it seems to me that there must be someone out there who would be interested in this event to lead. Unlike many leadership positions, this one lasts for one weekend and then the commitment is over until the following year. Lynn Maietta did this for years and I believe has offered advice and guidance for anyone taking on this job. We need someone to step up soon.

Second, I have been in touch with a group that is doing something in Clinton County that is similar to what we are doing here. I am working on getting together with them to ascertain how we may have some activities and facilities that would be of mutual benefit. This may be a wonderful opportunity to share resources, facilities, and activities. I will keep you posted.

Finally, I have heard from a couple of sources that the Sun Gazette is interested in having a painting done of their building. It was suggested that there may be a competition similar to the church competition at Christmas to select such a piece. I will be looking into this further and when I have more firm information I will be providing details.

The March meeting looks like a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of some really fine instruction in colored pencil. I saw the plan for the class and it is structured in a very professional manner. I definitely will not miss it.

As many of you know our website has been redesigned, giving us the affordability to allow blogging and workshop submissions directly from our membership. No more going through a webmaster or third person to get your information across a wide audience. Sounds great! But what’s the catch? Well, first-you must be a member of the Bald Eagle Art League (join now). Secondly all content must be art related, no crude radical or foul language.

How does is work?

Art show featuring many different artists at The Valley Gallery. It costs $10 to rent a tent. There will be art work, good food, and the radio station will cover the event. Anyone who wants to participate must contact the gallery owner, Don Kline at gallery@donkline.com, about one month in advance. It sounds like fun and a great chance for meeting other artists and good exposure for one’s work. Visit their website for more information.
